We have seen some making in the makerspace already this year, but we are working to build it up, and offer some more opportunities to teacher and students in the school. Knitting, Legos, and building with straws have been big hits in our space so far this year. The straws were the biggest surprise. For a few weeks straight it seemed like our makerspace was an ever changing structure garden. Multiple times a day I would see a new tower built of multi-colored straws and connectors. A couple of student even tried to line the straws up one after another to see long they could make it.
By the end of the month, we will have designed some monthly makerspace themes through the end of the year. We will have some promotions and activities to correspond with each theme. We will also have some planned programs. Knitting will be a must. I think I have a few teachers who will even help teach knitting, because that is definitely not one of my strengths. We will also do some programs for SHS Covers the Classics, a school-wide challenge inviting students to recreate covers of classic literature. We will have in person tutorials for digital art creation and a visiting expert to offer critiques.
We also have our fingers crossed for a couple of grants. Looking forward to what is coming!
